GOOD GOODS ISSEY MIYAKE
I designed the POP-UP at Tokyo Midtown and the display for “JABARA.” The JABARA display is also installed at four other locations: Ginza, Daikanyama, Shibuya PARCO, and Semba.

This fixture explores the tension between expansion and restraint. By fixing both ends of the accordion structure with stone, its range of movement is intentionally limited, emphasizing the adjustable nature of the form.

The stones used at both ends are leftover pieces originally intended for agari-kamachi, the threshold step at a Japanese entrance. Once meant to mark a boundary in space and action, they now regulate the structure’s expansion and create a relationship between openness and containment.

The two pipes supporting the glass top also recall the primitive structure of carrying objects with a pole, visualizing the essential function of a bag — to carry — within the display.

本什器は、蛇腹構造が持つ「伸び縮みする自由度」に対し、両端を石によって固定することで、自由でありながら制限された状態を意図的につくり出しています。 蛇腹は、石によって定められた範囲の中でのみ広がり、高さや形状を変えながら空間に応じて変化します。石によって可変範囲を定めることで、「どこまで広がれるのか」「どこで留まるのか」という境界が立ち上がり、蛇腹の可変性そのものを強調しています。
両端に据えた石は、上がり框として使用された端材です。かつて人の行為や空間の切り替わる境界として機能するはずだった素材が、今度は構造の広がりを制御し、広がりと収まりの関係を生み出しています。
また、商品を置くガラス天板を支える2本のパイプは、棒で物を担ぎ運ぶ原初的な構造とも重なり、現代の鞄が持つ「運ぶ」という機能を、空間の中で可視化しています。
