AtMa inc.
RECLAIMED FURNITURE
RECLAIMED FURNITURE is an ongoing upcycle project aiming to embody a creation that evolves with the times and the social context by AtMa inc. Whenever we visited factories and warehouses, we became aware of the reality that there were piles of waste and off-cut materials that had to be discarded, which led us to collect and reconstruct these materials to create tables, chairs and objects. These furniture and objects are sometimes composed solely of waste materials, while other times other materials such as stainless steel are added to ensure strength, or unexpected combinations of materials and shapes are created by utilising them as waste materials. By looking without any preconceptions at the individual narratives that each waste material contains, new possibilities and values are discovered, and then each piece is given a new role to shine. This idea and practices have become our foundation and we would like to continue to create this process of connection with community and society and link it to a circular relationship with furniture and materials.
0%SURPLUS
0%SURPLUS is a new series of RECLAIMED FURNITURE by AtMa inc.In general, it is common practice to place orders or secure stock quantities that include a few percent more than the required amount as a surplus in manufacturing and inventory management industries.
In interior construction work that we are involved in, due to various risk factors such as damaged materials, quantity errors, incorrect deliveries, as well as the complexity of on-site fitting and design, materials are ordered in quantities of “required amount + a few percent.” This is done to avoid the worst-case scenario where the project cannot be completed according to the client’s desired schedule. The materials ordered with a few percent surplus are prepared to address the aforementioned risks, so they are not necessarily used up entirely. As a result, a few percent of the materials typically remain after construction is completed. These materials represent the necessary quantity to ensure smooth project progress, but at the same time, they become surplus and are often referred to as waste or loss generated on-site. Additionally, in some cases, a certain amount of materials is kept at the factory for a specified period to address any defects that may arise after completion. Once this period has passed, these materials are disposed of. Not only tiles and marbles, but also materials such as carpets, wallpaper, and wood are subject to the same situation. Despite the efforts of each contractor and improvements in construction accuracy, this issue occurs at almost every interior construction site.
Therefore, in the projects we design ourselves, we considered collecting surplus materials after construction, with the understanding and cooperation of the client and contractor, and using them to create furniture. As professionals involved in the interior industry, while it is of course important to reduce on-site waste, we also believe that finding ways to make use of surplus materials is another effective solution.
0%SURPLUS is a product that utilises the accidental forms of materials left over or broken during cutting at the site or factory, connecting them with minimal stainless steel parts to give them new functions as furniture.
