J39.5は、壊れてしまったボーエ・モーエンセンのJ39のパーツを組み換えて製作された家具のシリーズです。
ヴィンテージ家具を扱う都内の倉庫を巡っている中で、片脚が無かったり、背もたれが割れてしまっている J-39 に出会いました。 海外からの輸送中に破損してしまい、一度は修復を試みたが直らなかったものや、修復するにも通常よりコスト、時間、労力がかかるという状態で倉庫の奥深くに眠っているものを引き取り、何か新しい価値を生み出すことが出来るのではないかと考えました。モーエンセン自身もシェーカーチェアを当時の生活に合わせてリデザインして J-39を生み出したという周知の話もありますが、私たちは現代社会に合わせて、新しい材料を加えるのではなく残っているパーツを組み替えて、発想の転換として、0.5デザインを加えることでリデザインすることを目指しました。製作のプロセスを通じて得た新しい発想は、価値や機能が失われたモノに対して新しい価値を見出し、より能動的な家具との関係性を築くことに繋がり、家具における持続可能性について考えるきっかけになりました。
J39.5 is a series of chairs made up of reassembled parts of Borge Mogensen’s J39.
We came across a J39 with missing one leg and a cracked backrest at a vintage furniture warehouse. The chairs had apparently been damaged in transit from overseas, and repairing them was more costly, time-consuming and labour-intensive than usual. We decided to take them back from the warehouse, as we felt that we could create new value for these chairs.
Mogensen himself redesigned the Shaker chair to suit the life of the time and created the J39, but we redesigned it by reconfiguring the remaining parts instead of adding new materials but adding 0.5 design as a change of mindset according to today’s modern society.
The new ideas gained through the design process led to a more active relationship with the furniture, finding new value in objects that had lost their value and function, and triggered thinking about sustainability in furniture.
