大日本印刷（DNP）がミラノデザインウィーク2019で発表した展示「Patterns as Time」の一部として制作したインスタレーションです。会場は二つの空間で構成され、AtMaは「文化や歴史の蓄積としての時間」をテーマとした空間を担当しました。

DNPは長年にわたり、多様な情報や印刷技術を通して文化や知識を記録し、社会へ伝えてきました。私たちはその思想を出発点とし、「Time Printing」というコンセプトを提案しました。

展示では、DNPが保有する貴重な日本の伝統文様アーカイブである「江戸小紋」と、日本の伝統的な柄や色彩を現代的に再構築したデザインシリーズ「MiDCiD」を取り上げています。過去から未来へと続く時間の流れを表現するため、それぞれのパターンを透明なアクリルパネルにレーザー刻印し、タイムラインに沿って幾層にも重ねて配置しました。

空間内では、綿密にプログラムされた光が刻印されたパターンを照らし出し、文様が空中に浮かび上がります。光の屈折と繊細なパターンの重なりによって、長い時間の中で育まれてきた文化や思想の蓄積を可視化する体験を生み出しました。

来場者は空間の中を歩きながら、過去から受け継がれてきた美意識と、その延長線上に生まれる新たなデザインを横断的に体験します。歴史や伝統を固定されたものとしてではなく、時代ごとに解釈されながら未来へ受け継がれていく動的な存在として捉え直すことを試みました。

本プロジェクトでは、失われつつある文化資産を単に保存するのではなく、身体的な体験として再編集することで、過去と未来をつなぐ新たな関係性を提案しています。印刷技術を情報伝達の手段としてだけでなく、時間や記憶を体験として共有するためのメディアへと拡張しました。

Time Printing

How can cultural memory be experienced rather than simply preserved?

Created for DNP and presented at Milan Design Week 2019, Time Printing translated the exhibition theme Patterns as Time into an immersive spatial experience.

Drawing from DNP’s archive of traditional Japanese patterns alongside contemporary pattern designs, AtMa developed the concept of “printing time.” Laser-engraved acrylic panels were layered along a timeline and illuminated through programmed lighting, allowing patterns to emerge and dissolve within space.

As visitors moved through the installation, they encountered cultural memory not as a static archive but as something continuously interpreted and renewed. Rather than preserving cultural heritage as information alone, the project transformed it into a shared spatial experience, exploring how cultural memory may continue through reinterpretation and encounter.
